Building a deck is a significant investment, and choosing the right decking material is crucial for long-term enjoyment and value. Considering the weather we experience in the Pacific Northwest, I’m a strong proponent of durable composite decking materials. The two best-selling brands in composite decking are TimberTech and Trex, and for good reason. Other brands fall short in terms of durability and appearance. TimberTech and Trex both offer a variety of styles, colors, and performance levels, but which one is the better choice for your project? Let's dive into a head-to-head comparison.

Similarities:

Before we get into the differences, it's important to acknowledge the shared qualities of TimberTech and Trex:

  • Composite Materials: Both brands utilize composite materials, blending wood fibers and recycled plastics to create durable, low-maintenance decking.

  • Reduced Maintenance: Compared to traditional wood, both TimberTech and Trex require minimal upkeep, resisting rot, decay, and insect damage.

  • Variety of Styles and Colors: Both brands offer a wide range of colors and textures, mimicking the look of natural wood while providing consistent color and finish.

  • Environmental Considerations: Both companies incorporate recycled materials into their products, promoting sustainable building practices.

Key Differences:

Now, let's explore the areas where TimberTech and Trex diverge:

  • Material Composition:

    • Trex: Primarily uses recycled polyethylene film (such as plastic bags) and reclaimed wood fibers. Trex often has a higher percentage of recycled materials, as their products are made of 95% recycled and reclaimed materials.

    • TimberTech: Offers a wider range of material compositions, including capped polymer (PVC) and capped composite options. Their Advanced PVC line is 100% synthetic, containing no wood fibers.

  • Performance and Durability:

    • TimberTech Advanced PVC: Is known for its superior resistance to moisture, fading, and scratching. It is considered a premium offering.

    • TimberTech Composite: Their four-sided polymer cap makes them highly resistant to moisture damage as well as being resistant to fading and scratches.

    • Trex: Offers good resistance to fading and staining. Trex utilizes a three-sided polymer cap, allowing the underside to breathe.

    • Both brands offer different tiers of products, so durability varies within their lines. Always compare like product lines directly.

  • Aesthetics:

    • Both brands offer a wide range of realistic wood grain patterns and colors.

    • TimberTech Advanced PVC: This line is often praised for its realistic wood look and matte finish.

    • TimberTech composite: Offers color-blending and authentic textures to create real wood looks.

    • Trex: offers a wide range of colors and wood grain textures as well.

    • Personal preference will most likely be the determining factor.

  • Price:

    • Generally, TimberTech tends to be slightly more expensive than Trex, especially for its premium lines like Advanced PVC.

    • However, prices can vary depending on the specific product line, region, and retailer.

  • Warranty:

    • Both brands offer warranties, but the terms and duration vary depending on the product line.

    • TimberTech Advanced PVC: Typically comes with a 50-year limited fade and stain warranty and a limited lifetime warranty.

    • TimberTech Composite: Comes with fade and stain warranties that range from 25 to 30 years.

    • Trex: Offers varying warranties, often including 25-year and 50-year options.

    • Carefully compare the warranties of the specific product lines you are considering.

  • Heat Retention:

    • Darker composite boards can get hot in direct sunlight. Timbertech Advanced PVC generally retains less heat than wood fiber composites.

Which One Should You Choose?

The best choice depends on your specific needs and budget:

  • For maximum durability and a premium aesthetic: TimberTech's Advanced PVC line is an excellent option, albeit at a higher price point.

  • For a balance of performance and affordability: Both TimberTech and Trex offer a variety of composite lines that provide excellent durability and aesthetic appeal at comparable prices.

  • For environmentally conscious consumers: Trex's high percentage of recycled materials is a significant advantage.

  • For those concerned about heat retention: Polymer capped products such as Timbertech Advanced PVC are a great choice.

Recommendations:

  • Visit the Trex and TimberTech websites. You will find detailed information about all of their product lines.

  • Always request samples and compare them side-by-side to assess the color, texture, and feel. Both Trex and TimberTech offer samples shipped directly to you from their websites. TimberTech offers free samples and Trex charges only a couple of dollars depending on the product line.

  • Composite materials have a higher initial cost compared to wood alternatives. However, when considering the longer-term expenses, such as maintenance, repair, and potential replacement, composite decking becomes highly appealing.

  • Consult with a professional deck builder. Not only will you get expert advice on the best decking material and installation techniques for your specific project and climate, but they should also be able to provide you with price estimates on each of the different product lines.

  • Carefully read the warranty information for each product.

If you were hoping for a decisive winner to be declared, I’m sorry. Ultimately, both TimberTech and Trex offer high-quality composite decking solutions, and you won’t go wrong choosing either brand for your project.
